Artist Statement:</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Part of my role
as an artist is to remind myself and the viewer to smile, as an
essential ingredient to our survival. Wood is the means in which
I get to explore this.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Laughter, pain,
wonder, sensuality, all deserve to be touched. My work allows a
visual and tactile connection with these primal emotions. Discovering
sensation in wood requires a lot of faith and patience.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Each piece has
its own secret.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">I need to listen
to help it come out.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Sometimes the
design hits immediately... other times, I sit with the wood for
a while, then suddenly visualizethe piece.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">But as I create,
surprises happen. And very often, the accidents are more interesting
than the original idea.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Perhaps the
accidents are the secret.</font></p>

<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Anne
Shutan creates one-of-a-kind pieces of sculpture and furniture,
affirming the sensuous nature of wood. Shutan's work is sought
by collectors around the country who know they are buying treasures
that will be around for generations.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Anne
enlivens each piece with her extraordinary wit and craftsmanship.
After studying the fundamentals of her craft for several years,
Shutan opened her own studio in Colorado. In 1985, an interior
designer was so taken with her work she introduced Shutan to the
master woodworker and sculptor, Jan DeSwart. There was an instant
rapport. At the end of their first meeting he said, "Finally,
you are the person that i will share my secrets with." Shutan
moved to Los Angeles and was DeSwart's protege until his death
in 1987.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Shutan
continues to expand her skills un creating unique works of art
in wood.</font> </p>
